India Gate: The 42 metre high, free standing arch, popularly known as India Gate, was designed by Lutyens ( a name) and built in 1931. It was originally called All India War Memorial in memory of th 90,000 soldiers of the Indian Army who died in World War I. The names of the soldiers are inscribed all along the walls of the arch. In 1971, an eternal flame was lit here to honour the Immortal soldiers. At night India Gate is dramatically floodlit while the fountains nearby are lit with coloured lights. India Gate stands at one end of Rajpath(name of a road) and the area surrounding it is generallly reffered to as India Gate. It was under the red sandstone roof of the beautiful canopy designed by Lutyens in 1936, that the marble statue of George V stood, looking westward at the magnificent residence of his viceroy. The statue has since been removed from its decorative surroundings and put at Kingsway Camp(name of a place).
