"Bakamamiştim" It means I havn´t looked. It includes "miş" which I believe is to indicate a reported action (often used in newspapers I´m told) I don´t follow why it is used in this context.

Yes, you are right, "miş,mış,muş,müş´ suffıxes are used to indicate a reported action. But in your case ´ Bakamamıştım´..so  person can  not report himself or herself with the past tense ending "di,dı,du,dü ". PLUS dont forget it has got ´dı ´ past tense ending .so in this case it loses its function and turns into a past tense action that has occured a certain time,

Bakamamıştım - I could not look   or   I wasnt able to look

Gidememiştim - I could not go      or  I wasnt able to go

Söyleyememıştim - I could not say  or I wasnt able to say

O feci kazaya bakamamıştım - I could not look at that terrible accident.

O yıl seni partide görememiştim - I could not see you at the party in that year.

Elektrikler gittiginden Türkçeye çalışamamıştım - Since electrics gone  I could not study Turkish. ( Since we had a power cut I was not able to study Turkish )

If it is just ´mış,miş,muş,müş´ then it is definetely a reported action. For example,

VERB + MIŞ,MİŞ,MUŞ,MÜŞ + PERSON (IM,İM,UM,ÜM.....)

KONUŞ + MUŞ +UM  (someone said that I talked )

Ben konferansta çok uzun konuşmuşum (its been said that I talked long in conferance )

                                                      (i heard that I made a long speech at the conferance )

Lets make it negatif now:

Ben konferansta çok uzun konuşmamişim ( I heard that I didnt made a long speech at the conferance )

so as you see there is no main past tense ending here "di,dı,du,dü )

gidememiştim - I hadn´t been able to go

söyleyememiştim - I hadn´t been able to say

If you want to simplify the construction, you can use -dı,-di,-du,-dü

bakamadım - I couldn´t look / I wasn´t able to look

gidemedim - I couldn´t go / I wasn´t able to go

söyleyemedim - I couldn´t say / I wasn´t able to say

But just because -mıştı can be simplified as - di, doesn´t mean they have exactly the same function.

I miss that point, I am not an expert in english grammer,,!

 we always need to teach "exact" equavalents of grammer.

Just to simplify it slightly Teach Yourself Turkish says "the -mişti tense of a verb has nothing to do with the -miş tense. It does not mean ´apparently´ or ´reportedly´.Instead,it is the equivalent of saying ´had done´ in English. ie the ´past perfect tense´

But what tunci and scalpel said stands.
