Traditional Muğla outfits move beyond borders

19 April 2011, Tuesday / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL

Colorful traditional clothing for women and children from the southwestern province of Muğla is known around the world.

With a history dating back about 500 years, this clothing is made of silk, and women accent their dress with golden accessories. Women and children wear these outfits in the street to ensure their customs survive in the villages, which are collectively called “Çomakdağ villages.” Tourists who arrive in the city for vacation from around the world visit the villages to see the centuries-old regional garb, particularly at weddings, which run for several days.

In an interview with the Anatolia news agency, Muğla Provincial Culture and Tourism Director Kamil Özer said they support the efforts of the village residents to maintain their centuries-old traditions.

The villages’ handmade folkloric dolls, embellished with miniature versions of traditional outfits, have been promoted in fairs in Japan and China, Özer noted, adding they have introduced the customs of Muğla villages in these countries.

In the meantime, a photo safari has been held to promote the traditional women and children’s outfits in Çomakdağ villages as part of Tourism Week activities this week. Wearing traditional dress, village residents posed for photographers in front of the traditional houses, which have peculiar architectural features.
