Why is my version of the first sentence wrong? Because it´s not "dinlenelim mi"?

Özlem bir pastaneye gidip dinlemek isteyip istemediğimizi sordu.

if we make it direct speech it would be:

Özlem "Bir pastaneye gidip biraz dinlenelim/dinlensek mi?" dedi.

On the other hand:

Özlem "Bir pastaneye gidip biraz dinlenelim." dedi.

= Özlem said "Let´s go to a patisserie and rest".

->

Özlem suggested to go to a patisserie and rest.
