Turkey has taken a gold and a bronze medal at the World Taekwondo Championships in Gyeongju, South Korea.
Servet Tazegül of Turkey, competing in the men´s 68 kilogram, grabbed a gold medal after beating Bagheri Motamed.
Dürdane Altunel, who is stepping onto the international taekwondo stage at 16 years of age, competing in the women´s 62 kilogram, won a bronze medal.
Tazegül, who advanced to the final after beating England’s Christopher Dubois on Tuesday, beat his Iranian opponent 9-8 to claim his medal.
The 22-year-old is one of Turkey’s most prolific athletes in taekwondo. He won a bronze medal in 68 kilogram in the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008, and was a double gold medal winner in the European Championships in 2008 and 2010. He also won a bronze medal at the previous World Championships in Copenhagen in 2009.
Teen athlete Altunel could not capitalize on winning the first point of the game and went on to lose the game 4-1 against Rangsiya Nisaisom of Thailand.
Rukiye Yıldırım meanwhile rose to the semifinal of the women’s 46 kilogram competition and defending European champion Rıdvan Baygut advanced to the 74 kilogram semifinal in the men’s round robin.
