Members of the Genel-İş, Belediye-İş, Sosyal-İş and Tüm-Bel-Sen unions gathered in İzmir’s Çankaya district
Investigations of corruption allegations that prompted raids of İzmir Municipality offices earlier this week drew protests from workers’ groups Wednesday.
Members of the Genel-İş, Belediye-İş, Sosyal-İş and Tüm-Bel-Sen unions gathered in İzmir’s Çankaya district and then marched to the Justice and Development Party, or AKP’s, İzmir branch headquarters to demonstrate against the ruling party.
The AKP knew that it could not be successful in the June general election, and therefore tried to be successful through the operations against the opposition-party-governed municipality, group spokesperson Ahmet Mutoğlu from Belediye-iş said in a press statement.
“The real operation will be in the ballot box in June 12,” Mutoğlu said in front of the AKP building, where police took extra security measures during the demonstration.
Approximately 50 employees of municipalities in the Aegean provinces of İzmir and Aydın, including high-ranking officials, were reportedly detained Monday morning on corruption allegations that included interfering with public tenders
