Kurtlar uluyor is correct. You can´t say Kurtlar uluyorlar, can you? But if I continue to talk about wolves referring to them with onlar, is the predicate still singular? What about the verb to be: Kurtlar geceleri gezen hayvan or hayvanlar?

Can anyone remember a topic that explains this question? All I can find is "Do not forget that people are and things is in Turkish".

Otherwise, have a nice day!

"Kurtlar uluyorlar" is OK but natives prefer to drop -lar suffix when there is more than one of it.

If you drop "kurtlar" part when the context make it clear, you need to add the other -lar.

(kurt-lar) uluyor-lar

Kurtlar geceleri gezen hayvanlar-dır. (You definetely need the red -lar in this case, it´s not a pesonal suffix but a plural one)

Kurtlar geceleri gezen hayvanlar-dır = Wolves are the animals wandering at nights

In brief:

-lar is used both as plural suffix and personal suffix for (they).

  • When a subject is plural and present in a sentence, you may or (may not) add the personal suffix.
  • You need (have) to add personal suffix, when the subject is not present in the sentence.

Example:

İnsanlar akşam evlerine giderler.

Now you may drop 2nd and/or 3rd

İnsanlar akşam evlerine gider.

İnsanlar akşam evi ne giderler.

İnsanlar akşam ev ine gider .

If subject is dropped:

(onlar) akşam evlerine gider ler.

(onlar) akşam evine gider ler.

For "şey" thing -lar personal ending seems unneccessary sometimes as you pointed out, but here are some counter examples:

Ters giden şeyler beni yolumdan alıkoydu.

Ters giden şeyler beni yolumdan alıkoydular.

O şeyler bana uygun değil .

O şeyler bana uygun değiller.

You better prefer to drop personal -lar for "şey" case. Many natives do so anyway.
