Dear all,

I am currently trying to translate an article on the Turkish Cypriot dialect from Turkish to English and by doing so have accumulated a number of questions. i am currently trying to tranlsate the following sentence and was wondering if anybody could offer any help/advice/tips etc..

Bu araştırmada imek fiilinin -miş eki almış varyantı olan imiş ´in Kıbrıs ağızlarındaki kullanılışı üzerinde durulmuştur.

My attempt:

When translating I have been taught to work backwards. so..

1) durulmuştur=focus

2)üzerinde= on/about

3) kullanılış=this belongs with  imiş ´in. So.. the usage of imiş

4) Kıbrıs ağızlarındaki=in the Cypriot dialect.

5) olan= subject participle=which

6) varyant-ı= this possessive belongs to imek fiilinin..So.. a variant/variation of the imek verb´s

7) -miş eki almış =replacement of the -miş suffix.

8) In this research

So we have...

In this research, the focus is on the usage of the imiş in the Cypriot dialect which is a variation of the imek verb´s replacement of the -miş suffix

Any good??

My attempt at a slightly longer sentence...

Araştırma sonucunda imiş ´in cümledeki yerinin değişkenliği , yani sadece yüklemden sonra değil, cümlenin başka unsurlarından sonra da gelebildiği ve bunun cümledeki önemli veya yeni bilgiyi vurgulamak için yapıldığı örneklerle gösterilmiştir.

1) Araştırma sonucunda=In the concluding section of this reseach

2)imiş ´in cümledeki yerinin değişkenliği=the irregularity of imis´s place within a sentence

3) yani sadece yüklemden sonra değil=in other words that it does not only come after a predicate

4) that it come come after other elements of a sentence

and in order to emphasize an important or new point in this sentence

5) yapıldığı örneklerle gösterilmiştir. can be seen from the examples presented.

So... Something along along the lines of...

How did i do?

It is correct but i think there is no need for and in the sentence. But you are native if you say so it is so.

Thank you for your help!

I added the and-although I agree i doesn´t make much sense-because of the and in the Turkish: "...yani sadece yüklemden sonra değil, cümlenin başka unsurlarından sonra da gelebildiği ve bunun cümledeki önemli veya yeni bilgiyi vurgulamak için yapıldığı örneklerle gösterilmiştir."

Also the sentence makes  two seperate points: 1) that it can come after other elements of a sentence AND 2) in order to emphasize an important or new point in the sentence.
