´To kick´ gives a lot of answers in the dictionary. What do football players do? I know vurmak is used for shooting a bomb to the goal but what do the footballers do when they just simply want to get rid of the ball?

 1.We use " vurmak " for " to kick " in football. [ This is most common use]

Kaleci topa vurdu ---> The goalkeeper kicked the ball.

 2. We also use "atmak " for some cases such as ;

Oyuncu topu dışarı attı [vurdu] ----> The player kicked the ball out.

Köşe atışı [vuruşu] ---> Corner kick

Penaltı atışı [vuruşu] ----> Penalty kick

 3. there is another word which is sort of slang " tepmek "

Bu akşam halı sahada top tepelim mi ? ---> Shall we kick the ball on carpet pitch tonight ?

Thanks, tunci. atmak sounds funny to me because I thought you throw with hands only. Can you also use topu elden ele geçirme in football?

 As far as I know , we dont use that phrase for football. we can use it for "handball, basketball,volleyball " as the hands involve in those sports.

For football we would use ; " Topu gezdirmek --> To walk the ball " [by using feet]

                                     " Topu ayaktan ayağa gezdirmek "
