A woman who was allegedly held captive and severely beaten by her boyfriend for four days in July died Thursday in the Central Anatolian province of Konya.

Meral Tahta, 32, was found at a bus stop in Konya on July 18, severely beaten and unconscious. Further examination at Konya Numune Hospital showed that she had suffered a brain hemorrhage due to blows she received to her head and that her kidneys had failed to due to dehydration and malnutrition.

Police apprehended Tahta’s boyfriend, Mustafa Konuk, who allegedly tortured her for four days after the couple had an argument, punching and kicking her and depriving her of food and water. He later left Tahta at a bus stop in Konya’s Selçuklu district and called police to say he had left his girlfriend there.

Konuk was arrested by a court on charges of attempted voluntary manslaughter. Tahta had two children from a previous marriage and was working as a waitress in a local bar. One woman was meanwhile killed and four injured by their husbands during the first three days of the Ramadan bayram holiday.

In the northwestern province of Sakarya’s Karapürçek district, a woman was allegedly killed by her husband for filing for divorce. The husband, A.Ö., was reported to have been barred from his home several times through court decisions for violence against his wife.

Some 27,000 cases of domestic violence, involving 26,000 women, were reported to police in the first six months of 2011, including cases of murder, assault and threats.

I could not even add my own comment to the above posting as I am feeling extremely sad that a woman was beaten to death by a person she trusted and most likely cared for. There is something definetly wrong with the way woman are perceived to have this many police reports regarding violence and injury to woman. I am shocked and also concerned that many don´t report this type of abuse either.

Is there no education system in place to teach young boys and men that this is wrong. Turkey values itself as a country who is morally tolerant to others no matter what religion, color or race.

Hey guys what about your woman.......?

27000 is an alarming number, but this is just the number of cases that are reported to the police. I think the actual number might even be 10 times higher. In Holland the estimates are that about 15% of domestic violence incidents are taken to the police. I think the same barriers, or even more barriers are present in Turkey, and most violence is never reported.

A man who is agressive towards women must have serious psychological problems many of which may be resulting from his upbringing. Turkey is not an exemplary country in this department. It is getting better gradually but then quite a few women prefer machos. I have heard this over and over.

Once when we were playing basketball with friends we saw a man beating his girl friend. We rushed to the scene. I held the guy from behind to control his aggression. The man did not even resist, he was obviously scared of being beaten or something. The lady took advantage of the situation and began hitting the man. The man ran to his car and left the scene. Some relationships are enigmatic. All hell breaks loose but somehow they can´t part or in some cases one of the partners doesn´t let the other leave.

What can we say other than RIP?

Again, I am shocked horrified and completely at a loss for words at the level of violence some people (not just in Turkey) endure.  It is horrifying to know he beat her over a period of days but to slowly starve and dehydrate her brings it to a new level of depravity...truely this man is a monster. Unfortunately there are many out there like him!

I volunteer at Tahirih Justice in Houston.  If you live in the US near one of the offices, if you´re interested in helping or just reading about GOOD things that are being done for women and children trying to escape violence, give this website a look:

Awareness is most of the battle!
