But don´t you think, Henry, that in
ben inanmayı seçtim
the previous (inanmayı) modifies what comes later (seçtim) as usual and the predicate is in it neutral place in the end of the sentence? That makes ´I chose´. seçmek takes accusative object and that´s why the infinitive inanma- is decorated with the ending -ı. This altogether makes
´I chose to believe/trust´.

Thanks Tunci and Abla for explaining my error. I should have concentrated a bit harder before posting. I always have problems mixing up verbal nouns and negative verb clauses.

Thanks Abla, I am envious of your understanding of Turkish sentence structures. Thankfully we have some very generous Turks (and non Turks) on this site who continue to help and correct learners.
