I am worried about the cartoonist who is on trial. I thought there was freedom of religion, and freedom of opinion in Turkey?

There is freedom of opinion here. But there is a question : Whose opinion?

I Think the right to freedom of opinion and expression does not include the right to insult the others´ sacred values. Writing "there is no God, religion is a lie" on the wall of the mosque in that cartoon was not a good idea, and it added nothing good to the cartoon but made me wonder what the cartoonist´s IQ would be...

People are offended by many things. You can´t ban them all. Let everyone talk what they want.Community and history will judge them. Most importantly they will judge themselves. As a Muslim I am not offended by those words. Because God still exists whatever he says and religioun is not a lie. No need to create victims.

I agree that there is a fine line between freedom and good/bad taste.  However, I don´t think having bad taste in humor should be a crime.

It is not crime for me either... Did you examine the cartoon? Writing "there is no god, religion is a lie" on the wall of the mosque should be explain with ´bad taste in humor", or simply stupidity? Just because he did that in a cartoon, doesn´t mean it´s a matter of art/humor. Moreover it is not the part of the "gist" of the joke.

Personaly I am not offended by that cartoon, but really surprised with lack of quality in it.

I do think that this was in very bad taste.  I just don´t agree that it is a crime.  Although I am not personally offended by it, I can certainly see how it would be offensive to some.  I would be willing to bet money that the cartoonist knew very well that this would be offensive and did it to test the limits of free speech in Turkey.

What makes me wonder is why put just the cartoonist on trial? Why not the Penguin´s editor or art director? Somebody had to approve the cartoon before publishing it.

I read the message as a personal opinion and as such it should not be considered any more insulting as the contrary claim. If saying God doesn´t exist insults those who believe in him, why shouldn´t atheists be insulted by people who say that God exists? It works both ways.

However, do I think the message was necessary to the cartoon? No. I see no other point of it than to stir up controversy, it didn´t add anything to the humour

The joke of the cortoon is that that man is calling GOd, "my lord, is it possible if I don´T perform the last part of the prayer? I have a thing to do..Thank you very much my Lord, have a nice day"

"Allah yoktur, din yalandır" (which is shown in red circle) can be seen by curious eyes..

I am saying again, I am not at all offended by the cartoon, but just trying to understand those who are offended.
