Turkey cancels Republic Day parades after deadly quake

28 October 2011, Friday / TODAYSZAMAN.COM

Turkey´s President Abdullah Gül (in the car with a black suit), flanked by Chief of Staff Gen. Işık Koşaner (standing beside Gül) and a commander, arrives at a parade marking the 87th anniversary of republic day in Ankara on Oct. 29, 2010. (Photo: Reuter]

Turkish officials have cancelled parades traditionally held every year to celebrate the proclamation of the Republic of Turkey in 1923 after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck the province of Van on Sunday, plunging the nation into grief over a disaster that has left at least 570 people dead.

President Abdullah Gül had also earlier cancelled an Oct. 29 reception commemorating the founding of the Turkish Republic due to the earthquake. A statement released by the Office of the President on Monday declared that the reception had been cancelled “while work continues to save any citizens found under the rubble and while our people continue to suffer deep grief.”

This old picture [during independence war] shows that under what conditions our ancestors fought to save the country. Mekanları cennet olsun...Türkiye Cumhuriyeti ilelebet yaşayacaktır. !

Esef etme paşam Cumhuriyetimiz var olsun

Hurriyet

O sıralarda Karadeniz bölgesinde gezide bulunan Cumhurbaşkanı Gazi Mustafa Kemal Paşa, depremi duyar duymaz Samsun-Sivas yolu ile Erzurum’a gidiyor. Kafilede eşi Latife Hanım, Hamdullah Suphi (İstanbul Milletvekili), Kılıç Ali (Gaziantep Milletvekili), Rauf Bey (Rize Milletvekili), Cumhurbaşkanlığı Başkâtibi Tevfik Bey, Başyaver Rusuhi Bey, Muhafız Kıtalar Komutanı İsmail Hakkı Bey (Tekçe), Yaver Muzaffer Bey, Hususi Kalemden Memduh Bey, vali ve diğer görevliler bulunuyor. Cumhurbaşkanı Hasankale’ye geldiğinde kış yakın olduğundan zamanında gerekli yardımların yapılması emrini veriyor. Hasankale yakınındaki harap 6 köyü gezen Mustafa Kemal çok üzülüyor. O sırada bir köylü, kurtarıcının yanına yaklaşıp şu sözlerle teselli ediyor: “Esef etmeyiniz paşam. Hükümet-i Cumhuriyetimiz var olsun. Hiçbir şey istemeyiz. Onların sayesinde biz bu köyleri altından yaparız.” Yoksul ama gönlü zengin yöre halkı, savaştan çıkmış devletimizin yoksulluğunu bildikleri için Kahraman Gazi Mustafa Kemal Paşa’nın üzülmesini, kederlenmelerini istemiyorlardı
