Quoting elenagabriela

what is the difference between teşekkürler and sağol

 teşekkürler is arabic origin word. [by adding turkish suffix in the end [ "ler"] which means thanks.

sağol is pure turkish word which means thank you [ literally sağ =alive, ol = be [ may you be alive]

While you wait for the native view, another link for you, elenagabriela:

         http://www.turkishlanguage.co.uk/thankyou.htm.

I have understood when someone does for you something that he doesn´t have to do, something beyond his duty, it is the place for sağ ol(un). In addition, I found in the old posts the opinion that for some reason it sounds more masculine than teşekkürler/teşekkür ederim. Whatever it means...

I guess sağol is maybe informal in current speaking..I have read about use of sağol by talking to close friends, but, in the same time I have heard or read this for teşekkürler....{#emotions_dlg.confused}..thank all of you anyway

Its not bordered as black or white when to use these two words in daily life. But if we have to give conclusions about usage then those would be ;

- Sağol is more informal whereas Teşekkürler is more formal.

- Sağol is more likely to be used among close friends.

- Teşekkürler is more likely to be used when to talk strangers,people we dont know.

- Sağol sounds more masculine as Abla said.

- In the army Sağol is the only word that has to be used when to answer commanders and other communications between soldiers and officers.

- In formal letters and papers Teşekkürler [ Teşekkür ederim, Teşekkürlerimi borç bilirim..etc] has to be used.

- Sağol [un] sounds warmer and more sincere..

etc...
