Many native English speakers nowadays have very little knowledge of English grammar. This is because todays educators put a priority on creativity, and not as much emphasis on language skills.

Anyway, for Turks, English must also be very hard to learn and master.

Here is an item that I copied about the various tenses in English

 Great Lesson , Henry. I agree that English is not easy to learn. Actually any language is not easy if you are learning it from scratch . I just want to edit the last sentence if you dont mind .

my father = babam

olacak = he will be

sürüyor olacak = he will have been driving

Thank you for the post, Henry. I find tenses one of the most difficult things in Turkish to learn. When I am corrected I just accept it and shake my head. It´s difficult to get to the heart of the problem if you understand what I mean.

But I have learned something, too. What I learned shows in your examples: what is called perfect tense in English is actually present in the Turkish system: Bir yıl Türkçe öğreniyorum. Actually it makes sense as the action takes place as well in the present moment as it did in the past.

"dır" means "for" here and "dan/den beri" means since. You should use them. You can use "dan/den beri" instead of "dır" but you cant do the opposite.

"dır" and "den/dan beri" gives a continuity meaning and you can use it with past continous tense also.

Bir yıldır orada çalışıyordu.
