Merhaba
can someone tell me about the black population in turkey and if there are hair salons that cater for black people´s hair there.
I plan to travel and stay for quite a bit of time, so hair maintainance is at the top of my list. Are there salons in the major cities? (istanbul, ankara, izmir etc)
We have turks living in South Africa but they fit right in because our country is racially diverse. What can I expect as a black person in turkey?

Well, as far as I know, barbers are divided into two categories in Turkey: those who make bombastic looking unbelievably big hair for ladies preparing for wedding parties, and those who turn your wife into an alien when there is apparently no reason.
I have never heard of white or black hair salons. We don´t have a sizeable black community in Turkey. If you are talking about afro models, I am sure you can find many salons offering that type of hair do.
There must be salons offering Jamaican style hair braids because I occasionally see people with that style.
I hope you´ll enjoy your stay in Turkey no matter what happens to your hair.

As far as I know there are no black hair salons in Turkey (I do know what they are, plenty of them around in Holland). You´ll just have to walk in a salon and ask if they can handle your hair. The number of black citizens in Turkey is small, but they must go to hair salons too, right? If you travel around you might encounter some people staring, but that´s because in more remote places you might be the first black person they´ve seen! (Don´t know where you plan to travel). I do have some Turkish friends from the East of Turkey who have small-curled hair, similar to black hair.

We have no "Black hair salons" in here. Because we are not separating the people black or white in here. You can use every barber salons for your hair.

thank you all for your comments. I appreciate them greatly. The issue about black hair/ white hair is because in my country, I have been told to my face that a "white salon" does not cater for people with my type of hair. So, Its nice to know that in Turkey I can just go to a salon and I can get my hair done.
Thanx again

Dear Buhle, Turkish hairdressers cater any type of hair. Especially the ones in the big cities [Istanbul, izmir, ankara ] are very professional and skillful . You just go in one of them and describe what you want, I can assure you that they will do a great job that you will be pleased with the result.

Black and "white" hair salons are not a racist thing. They are just a specialisation. For example, in Turkey you have mostly male and female hairsalons, while in Holland men and women mostly go to the same salons. It is simply a fact that "black" hair has a different structure and requires different cutting techniques. I have white friends in Holland with very curly hair who always go to black salons, because they can handle the frizz better. Just not a lot of frizz around in Turkey
