VOWEL HARMONY
Turkish is a suffix-based language. The root does not change but takes suffixes. The suffixes indicate things like verb tense, personal pronoun, plurals and negatives.
In this lesson we will look at the ´be-suffix´. The English verb ´to be´ can be translated by the Turkish "olmak". In the third-person singular (English is), the be-suffix may be -d(t)ir, -d(t)ir, -d(t)ur, -d(t)ur.
Which of these is used follows certain rules -the rules of vowel harmony.
Vowel harmony is one of the most important features of Turkish, unlike anything in English. It is the character of the eight Turkish vowels which establishes the rules, these eight vowels being divided into two basic groups:
Vowels : a, i, o, u e, i, 6, u
The first group (a, i, o, u), are back vowels, the second group (e, i, 6, u) are front vowels. When adding suffixes to roots the vowels used in the suffixes are determined by the last vowel of the root. If the last vowel of the root is a front vowel, then all suffix vowels will also be front vowels, and vice versa.
In the word masa (table), for example, the last vowel, a, is a back vowel so all suffixes added to masa will use back vowels. Which of the four back or front vowels is used is also specified by rules, given in the table below.

The word ev (house) has as its (last) vowel e which is a front vowel - so suffixes will also take front vowels.

kökü ü ü = dür
Because in the above examples the (last) vowels are front vowels, their suffixes also have front vowels.
Notice:
When the root ends in c, f, h, k, p, s, s or t and the first suffix begins with d, this d is changed to t.
The root word kitap ends with p so the -dir suffix becomes -tir.

SENTENCE STRUCTURE
Having looked at vowel harmony, let us see basic sentence structure.

As shown above, English and Turkish have different sentence structures.
a) In both languages the subject comes at the beginning of the sentence. Bir (a, one) may come before the noun and after the subject. In English, however, ´is´ comes before the object, whereas in Turkish the verb (in this example -dir, the be-suffix) comes after.

Bu bir ev.. This is a ....
This is a house.
b) Turkish sentences take -dir, -dir, -dur, -dur according to vowel harmony.
Bu bir evdir. This is a house.
Bu bir öğrencidir. This is a student.
Bu bir gözdür. This is an eye.
Bu bir güldür. This is a rose.
Bu bir masadır. This is a table.
Bu bir kapıdır. This is a door.
Bu bir salondur. This is a hall.

Bu bir çocuktur. This is a child.

In Turkish, to talk about nearby things, bu (this) is used, and for far away things §u or o (that) are used.
