Ne kadar? how much?

Ne kadar süt istersiniz? Ne kadar süt lazım?
(You cannot use "kaç tane", you cannot count the milk. Yet you can still count the liters)

Kaç litre süt istersiniz? Kaç litre süt lazım?

(If you buy more than one newspaper) Hangi gazeteleri istersiniz?

Kaç paket sigara istersiniz? Kaç tane (referring to paket) sigara istersiniz?

Kaç ekmek istersiniz? (You can use "kaç tane ekmek istersiniz" but it is long and unnecesarry to use "tane" here)

Kaç kilo elma istersiniz? Kaç tane elma istersiniz? (Nobody sells single apple, prefer kilo!)

Ne kadar şeker lazım? Kaç kilo şeker arzu edersiniz? ...istersiniz?

When talking about amounts, a numeral (and kaç respectively, I suppose) is rarely used alone. Either there is a noun or it is replaced (or accompanied) with tane. tane means ´grain´ but it can be used quite widely for small and big things. This example is from our own lessons:

                          - Buralarda bisiklet kiralayan bir dükkan var mı?

                          - Postanenin yanında bir tane olmalı.

(´Is there a shop hiring bicycles here? There should be one next to the post office.´ )

The meaning of tane is concrete. For instance

                            iki saat ´two hours´

                            iki tane saat ´two clocks´

The similar replacement for a person is kişi, for cattle, cabbages and onions baş.
