A few minutes ago, walking back from lunch, I started to cross the street when I heard the sound of a coin dropping. It wasn´t much but, as I turned, my eyes caught the heads of several other people turning too. A woman had dropped what appeared to be a dime.
The tinkling sound of a coin dropping on pavement is an attention-getter. It can be nothing more than a penny. Whatever the coin is, no one ignores the sound of it. It got me thinking about sounds again.

It could be wrong. I´m sure there will be/already have been others whose translation is better than mine.Take care now,bye bye then (:

Tercüme doğru, ama bence İngilizce metinde bir hata var..."I started to cross the street when I heard the sound of a coin dropping" diyor....Sanki duyulan para sesi onun karşıya geçmesinin sebebi imiş gibi (paranın sesini duymasa, geçmeyecekmiydi?).

Sanırım ifade edilmek istenen şey "I heard the sound of a coin dropping, while starting to cross the street"

I agree with Alpha - I too think that what author wants to say is that he was already crossing the street when he heard the sound of coin dropping. However, I cannot comment on whether the original text is gramatically correct or not. Do you think that the first sentence, after making the change below, would convey this meaning?

Birkaç dakika önce öğle yemeğinden geri dönüşte sokaktan karşıya geçtiğimde bir bozuk paranın düşüş sesini duymuştum.
