Please tell, what is the difference between "umut" and "ümit?" I should know this by now.

Quoting ümitli

Please tell, what is the difference between "umut" and "ümit?" I should know this by now.

From what I read umut is more Turkish in origin, whilst ümit has a connection with Farsi.

Both words mean hope (as nouns) but differences occur when you are using the verb forms.

Tunci added this useful post below for the verb forms

These two words have same meaning. The only difference is ;

Ummak is pure Turkish word --> to hope ,to expect

[note : some people are using it as Umut etmek which is unnecessary  ]

Ümit etmek is Farsi origin word.[it has to be used with turkish word "etmek" as verb]

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Sınavı geçeceğimi umuyorum ---> I am hoping to pass the exam.

Sınavı geçeceğimi ümit ediyorum ---> I am hoping to pass the exam

Umarım bunu hatırlayacaksınız I hope you will remember this Smile
