The Fez!

I have been reading that the Fez was traditional dress code for the Ottomans and that it was banned by Ataturk. Can anybody tell me why?

The Fez is still synonomous with Turkia for many people (along with belly dancers and Turkish delight !!!). Why was it banned and why are they still available to buy in street markets in Turkia?

(I guess i could have posted this in the Turkey section (!) but I never usually dare to tread in it's hallowed hallways lol!)

fez is an old costume or traditon . it reminds ottoman times and reactionary (of course not everyone wears fez is a reactionary one-this is something about revolution) with this new revolution , turkey has a new face ( you know, wearing like europeans) actually, fez is a moroccan custom.

it is still available for tourist..according to most of them turkiye is like an arabic country and people wearing fez around. this is contradictory.we do not wear fez,but some thinks we do and shopkeepers earn money thanks to the fez which is not belong us

Ahh ok! Thanks Goner - maybe it is an incorrect image of Turkia that has been created by Hollywood! Thanks!

I do sometimes question whether Turkia has lost some of its character and heritage in its moves to become more europeanised......whilst the change of progress is inevitable that does not mean that we cannot learn from history and indeed embrace parts of that history.
