o = he/she/it/that

in the turkish lessons here in grammar it says:

onun evi = his house

onun evi = the house of that

btw, not "that"

that = şu

i know that

its still what i asked about. i asked how can "the house of that" and "his house"

have same meaning, same translation. i have no problem with "he/she/it" .

Demonstartive posessive pronouns:

of this bu-n-un
of that (between this and that) şu-n-un
of that o-n-un
of these bunlar-ın
of those (between these and those) şunlar-ın
of those onlar-ın

Bunun evi --> The house of this

Şunun evi --> The house of that

Onun evi --> The house of that

Bunların evleri --> The house of these.

Şunların evleri --> The house of those.

Onların evleri --> The house of those.

that zam. (çoğ. those)
1. o, şu: Did you see that? Onu gördün mü? This is a verbena and that´s a lantana. Bu mineçiçeği, o da ağaçminesi. After that he went to bed. Ondan sonra yatağa girdi. The best yarn is that spun by hand. En iyi iplik elle bükülendir. He´s one of those who think that they know everything. Her şeyi bildiğini zannedenlerden biri o.
2. öyle: "Is she clever?" "That she is." "Zeki mi?" "Öyledir."
3. ki: I´d like to see the cow that jumped over the moon, please. Ayın üzerinden atlayan ineği görmek istiyorum, lütfen. Are you the man that invented the cotton gin? Çırçırı icat eden adam siz misiniz?

s. (çoğ. those) o: Where´s that cat? O kedi nerede? I like those houses. O evler hoşuma gidiyor.

http://translate.google.com/#tr/en/o

http://translate.google.com/#tr/en/onun%20evi

http://translate.google.com/#tr/en/onun

you can use that only when you are pointing at something, which in turkish can be used with o and şu both

but not with posession like "onun"

3. That

“That” kelimesi Türkçeye “şu” veya “o” şeklinde çevrilir ve konuşan kişinin uzağındaki nesneleri göstermek için kullanılır. Hem işaret sıfatı hem de işaret zamiri olarak kullanılır. İşaret sıfatı olarak kullanıldığında hemen ardından tekil bir isim gelir.

That house belongs to my grandfather. Şu ev dedeme aittir.
Give me that dictionary. Şu sözlüğü bana ver.
That man is very generous. Şu adam çok cömerttir.

That işaret zamiri olarak kullanıldığında hemen ardından tekil bir fiil alır.

That is a map. Şu şemsiyedir.
That is my car. O benim arabamdır.
What is that? Şu nedir?

That, this gibi daha geçen bir isim, kalıp veya cümlenin de yerini tutabilir. Bu durumda o veya bu şeklinde tercüme edilir.

He wanted to steal the radio. I didn’t like that. O radyoyu çalmak istiyordu. Bu benim hoşuma gitmedi.

That ayrıca daha sonra göreceğimiz relative clause konusunda which ve who nun yerini tutabilir.

That ayrıca “noun clause” larda “it” ile başlayan cümle tiplerinde ve bazı bağlaçlarla kullanılır.

how can "onun evi" mean "His house" and at the same time mean "The house of that" ?

"o" is both pronoun and adjective in Turkish. But in English you can´t use he/she/it as an adjactive. You can´t say "he car". You must say "that car" But in Turkish there is no such difference.

The problem is we use "o" for both "he" and "that".

Please note also that o as a personal pronoun in all its meanings is often dropped from a sentence. In my opinion this is the biggest difficulty for a learner once she tries to trip up units which are larger than sentences, i.e. texts. One misunderstanding two pages ago can really badly lead you astray.
