"Just as flag burning is a symbolic act, so too can protecting the right to burn a flag be a symbol of our democracy."

My attempt:

Bayram yakmasının sembolik bir etkinlik olması gibi, tıpkı bayram yakması hakkını korumak demokrasimizin bir sembol olabilir.

FLAG  =  Bayrak

EID =   Bayram

   The translation would be something like ;

Tıpkı  bayrak  yakmanın  simgesel bir eylem olması gibi bayrak yakma hakkını korumak da  demokrasimizin bir simgesi  olabilir.

In  this  compound sentence which is formed with correlative conjunction  -just as ………so,  adding "tıpkı" is not  compulsory. However, it does intensify  the expression.

  [Tıpkı] 1. clause     +  gibi   ,    first part of  second clause + da [de]  +  second part of  second  clause

  The  first  clause    +  gibi

[Tıpkı]  bayrak  yakmanın  simgesel bir  eylem  olması  gibi,

Just  as   burning  the  flag [being] a symbolic act,

In Turkish literal translation we see it  is in  possessive  form -->

 bayrak  yakmanın  simgesel bir  eylem  olması  --->   its being  a symbolic  act  of  burning  flag.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

 The first part of  second clause +  da[de] + second part of  second clause

bayrak yakma hakkını korumak da  demokrasimizin bir simgesi  olabilir.

In Turkish literal translation ;

bayrak  yakma hakkını ---> to protect the right of burning a flag

da --> so  too [also]

demokrasimizin bir simgesi  olabilir. ---> it can be the symbol of our democracy.

A  simple  example of  that type of  sentence ;

Just  as  he  knows  Turkish,  so [too]   his girl friend  does.

First  clause     +   gibi      ,  first  part  of  second  clause +   da[de]  +   second  part of second clause

Kendisi  Türkçe  bildigi   gibi ,   kız  arkadaşı    da    [Türkçe ]  biliyor.

 Here, comes an opinion ;

Burning a flag [no matter which country´s flag it may be ]  is an absolute disgraceful act.

Since, the flag is a symbol of a nation and it is one of the highest value we all have to respect .

Burning the holy values,  [ burning flags, burning Quran, burning Bible  ...is just nothing else but  coward acts ]
