Hi, without names please. My sister-in-law has a baby who has not reached the age of forty days yet. The baby coughs fitfully with no break at times. It breaks the heart to listen to it. They took him/her to the doctor. No medicine was given to the baby because he was not forty days old yet. Please could experienced mothers help us? What can we do? Any ideas?

God knows why doctors would not give any medicine.. This is an old tradition and I think, it might be, possibly,  from the times with outbreaks of diseases and aiming to protect the baby from the germs etc. But still in these days? and the doctor would not give madication. It does not sound right to me.
