The suffix -I [i,u, ü ]

The suffix  -I    [ i,u, ü

 

 

This can be considered as  verbal adjective suffix , since it does turn some verbs into an adjective.

 

 

Such as  ;

 

ölmek - to die 

 

öl  +  I [ i, u, ü  ] 

 

öl  +  ü  -->  ölü  [ death person or something , deceased]

 

ölü  yapraklar  -  dead  leaves

 

----------------------------------

 

çevrilmek  -  to  be surrounded by

 

çevril   +  i   =  çevrili   [ surrounded ]

 

 üç  tarafı  denizlerle  çevrili  bir ülke  -

 

 A country which its three sides  surrounded by the sea.

dikmek  - to plant , to make something stand

 

dikilmek -  to be planted 

 

dikil + dikili   ===>  planted, standing 

 

dikili  ağaç  -  planted  tree, standing  treee

 

 

There is a saying when people has nothing in this life [ wealth wise] ;

 

 " dikili  ağacı  olmamak "  ===>  Having no saving , nothing at all. [financially]

   

    no house, no belongings ,  not   even a single tree. "

 

Selim´in  bir dikili  ağacı bile  yok.    ---> Literal meaning is  --->  Selim has not even a single [standing] tree.

 

That means, Selim has no saving in life  at all. [money and economically]

oymak =  to carve 

 

oy +  ul  [passive mode]  + u   =  oyulu   --> carved

kurmak =   to establish, to found, to form, to   install 

 

 

kur  +   ul mak  =  to be formed, to be established

 

kurul + =   kurulu   ----->  formed, established, installed

 

Büyük  ağaçlardan  kurulu  bir  orman --->  A forest  formed of   big  trees.

örtmek -  to cover

 

ört  +  ül  + mek =  to  be covered

 

ört  +  ül   +  ü  örtülü --->   covered

 

Kısa  otlarla  örtülü  bahçe. -- >  The garden that is covered with  short wild  grass.

sermek -  to  spread something  out  on the floor

 

ser  +  il   +  mek  =  to  be spread

 

ser  +   il    +   i   =   serili   ---->  streched out on,  laid out on [something]

 

Yere  serili  olan  halının  tam  ortasında  bir  sehpa vardı.

 

There  was  a coffee  table  right  in  the  middle  of   the carpet  streched out on the floor.

 takmak =   to   attach, to  put on , to  plug in 

 

 tak  +  ıl  +  mak   =  to  be attached, to be put on , to be plugged in

 

  tak  +  ıl   +  ı   =    takılı     --->  attached,  plugged  in ,  on 

 

  Duvara   takılı   fiş…….   --->  the  plug  that  is  plugged in on the wall………..
