merhaba

A friend of mine has taught me to write "turkcem gelisiyor" for the above.

So i replied to say ingilizceni gelisisun (your english is improving) but i was corrected to "ingilizceni gelistiriyorsun"  is this right as i dont understand how the verb has been formed

merhaba

Hi John

"Your English is improving" would be İngilizcen gelişiyor.

(the possessive ending goes on the word for the language."

If you wanted to make it sound more like a reply, you could add "de" for "too".

İngilizcen de gelişiyor - your English is improving too.

Gelişmek is to improve i.e. to get better.

Geliştirmek is the causative of it. We would also often translate it as to improve in English, but it means to make something else get better. The think that is being made better takes the -i ending. The verb takes the ending of the person causing the improvement to happen.

So İngilizceni geliştiriyorsun means "you are improving your English" or "you are making your English get better".

Thanks for your help.

I made a mistake...I meant to say your turkish is improving.

I understand now...i made a mistake with the verb as well.I was thinking of gelmek for some reason.
