Kız laftan anlamak istemiyordu.
We can translate it like this: The girl didnt want to listen to what I said.

Kız laftan anlamak istemiyordu.
We can translate it like this: The girl didnt want to listen to what I said.
I checked "laftan anlamak" phrase on tureng.com and the translation for it is "listen to reason".
Does it mean that here he tried to explain, or convince girl to do something, and she didn´t listen to him? Or does it simply mean that he was talking about something (not necessarily trying to persuade her to do anything - perhaps just talking on some topic, like weather ) and she didn´t want to listen to it?

I think it is the same thing....whatever he told she didnt listen..it is enough
I guess in turkish, like in other languages, there are different forms to express something, depends what do you want to stress...

Laftan anlamak
LITERAL MEANING "to understand words", "to understand what she is told"
FIGURATIVE MEANING "to do as one is told", "to obey"
"kız laftan anlamak istemiyordu" does not ,in this context, mean "she did not want to listen" or "she did not understand speech" (she is neither dumb nor deaf), she just did not want to take the order or "do as she was told"

"laftan anlamak" is not about obeying an order. It can be translated as "to listen to reason" as tomac said. I translated it "girl didnt want to listen to him" thinking that girl behaving irrational.
