I'm not sure if there is a topic similar to this somewhere, if there is forgive me...

I thought it would be a good idea for people to write a new phrase/new phrases or anything they've learnt today, that way we can share and expand our new vocabulary...

Today I learnt - Bugün öğrendim...

Yaşasın = hooray! yipee!
Düşersin! = (if you're not careful) you'll fall!
Tokatı yersin! = You'll get a slap!
Kendi kendime seçtim= I chose it all by myself
Kafamı çarptım= I banged my head
Ne tür müzik seversin? - What type of music do you like?

(Of course , if there are any mistakes then any corrections would be very helpful please )

Kendinize iyi bak arkadaşlarım .

Ugh! I'd hate to think they'd be teaching you about this concept. In Turkey, teachers can use violence against students in class. I think it is very wrong and should be outlawed, but no one really cares about it that much. I suppose it's a culture thing. There's even a saying for teachers hitting a student, which goes like:

"Ogretmenin vurdugu yerde gul biter."
"Roses will sprout from the spot your teacher has struck."

But still, I think it's mean. We aren't mules. Heck, even mules aren't even hit anymore. The animal laws are protecting them. So why are children being subjected to this crap?

Erem,

Hehe don't worry, I don't have a teacher If my teacher told me anything like that, I'd be considerably worried! It is featured in the Learn Turkish book I have, and I've heard one of my friends say something similar... It's certainly not a phrase I'll go around using, but it's good to understand things that people say. Any knowledge comes in useful I think
Having read your post again, I didn't know that, and it's a real shame that some teachers use violence. I've seen teachers here lose their temper but never physically touch someone like they used to be able to do.

Erem,

Erem, I found your post quite interesting. I can remember here in the U.S. when teachers had the right to reprimand students for not behaving. Typically, a paddle on the behind or a slap on the hand was permitted. I also remember as a kid having a little fear of my father, if I had gotten in trouble. Here is the problem with today, kids have no fear or a lack of respect for their parents, authortative figures and most definately show little respect to their teachers. Heck, you have kids showing up in schools with guns, shooting other students calling the police on their parents etc... I believe today kids don't have the fear of consequences, like I did as a child. We knew if we misbehaved, we had to face the paddle and most of all our parents. Yes, this was more humiliating I believe, than getting a detention or having to write an essay. Call me old fashioned, but some of that philosphy worked on kids back in my day and that wasn't so long ago. Now, don't get me wrong I'm not agreeing that violence is the answer. But I can tell you most kids after getting spanked or slapped on the hand, learned their lesson. Including me.

I totally get what you're saying. I myself were beaten as a kid by my teacher. Rather 'harshly' I might add. Some teacher were taking that to the extreme. BUT, I do 'not' believe violence solves anything. However, what teachers 'can' do to get their students to behave is, train them. Much like training a dog or a cat. How you ask? By awarding "good" behaviour. And good behaviour alone. It could be something simple. Like an off-day in class or a bar of chocolate. Also make the environment fun. Back in Turkey, people didn't respect teachers that hit you b/c they were the autority figure, they respected them b/c they were "afraid" of them. Respect it EARNED, not given. Think a little on what I'm saying.

tea, here goes my support, u r so much rite, dear! today i can thank those teachers of mine who used to give a good lesson of life (spank, slap, etc), nothing really evil happent to me, opposite, due such punishment i could learn wot was wrong and rite. i did hate them when i was a kid, now the life shows how much it was helpful for me!
nowadays things went completely wrong: at school near me, teachers hire guards who protect them from kids. this is so sick, its a fault of stress-free way of raising children. now the society bears the consequences of their decision, falling prey of the trendy system once. they and we have to go thru such life lessons, we r not wise enough to foresee.

Violence solves nothing. Violence begets nothing but a vicious cycle of further violence.
