ödevim için alt yazı...

Merhaba.

On a website I found such a statement:

"Ödevim için alt yazı hazırlarken bir kelimenin İngilizcesinde değil ama Türkçesinde ikilemde kaldım."

I have two questions in reference to this sentence.

1.) What could it mean "ödev için alt yazı hazırlamak"? I know the word alt yazı only as "subtitles", mainly in movies. But how can one prepare subtitles for their homework?

2.) What is the functions of the possessive suffixes -(s)i after English and Turkish? It´s like "I´m in doubts in a words´s Turkish one, not English one".. That sounds a bit weird.. My guess- are the forms with possessive suffix abbreviations for "..İngilizce ikileminde değil ama Türkçe ikileminde kaldım." Are my assumptions correct?

Thanks in advance.

1) Nice question. Maybe he studies cinema in university

2) You can interprete them such this: English or Turkish meaning of a word

3) Your assumptions are wrong. But I think use of ikilem is not correct in the sentence too.I would say:

Ödevim için alt yazı hazırlarken bir kelimenin İngilizcesi hakkında değil ama Türkçesi hakkında ikilemde kaldım.

alt (beneath, underside)

yazı (1writing, 2text, 3lettering)

alt yazı (subtitle (direct: under-writing))

Yalnızca filmler veya belgeseller için değil, haber programları için de kullanılır. (Not only for the movies or documentaries, it´s also used for the news programmes.)

geçmek (to pass)

alt yazı geçmek (to inform by broadcasting a subtitle (direct: to pass a subtitle))

örnek:

TRT az önce alt yazı geçti. Japonya´da tsunami olmuş. (TRT have just now gave a subtitle. A tsunami has occured in Japan.)

[Imagine that you were watching the news.]

________

kelime+in(genitive) İngilizce+i(possessive)------->kelimenin İngilizcesi (the English translation of the word) [direct: the English of the word]

kelimenin İngilizcesi ve Türkçesi (the English and Turkish translations of the word.)

Bir kelimenin Türkçesinde ikilemde kaldım. (I was in a quandary for the Turkish translation of a word. (direct: I stayed in a dilemma at the Turkish translation of the word.))

ikilem (dilemma, quandary)

kalmak (1to stay, 2to remain)

ikilem+de----------------->ikilemde (in a dilemma)

ikilemde kalmak (direct: to stay in a dilemma)
