Hi, I am reading a story and I have a translation question.  The sentence reads

Bu ülkenin kralının bir de oğulları varmiş.

Does that mean the king has one son or more than one son?  I am confused with the bir and then the -lar ending.

My attempt is;

King of this land had had sons also.

As in harp00n´s translation, bir de means also.

bu ülkenin kralının bir de oğulları varmış

Another examples:

sen de gitme

i guess you can see difference 

"bir de" can also mean "also".

Bu ülkenin kralının bir de oğulları varmış. (The king of this country has also sons.)

=Bu ülkenin kralının oğulları da varmış.

oğul+lar(plural)---------------------->oğullar (sons)

oğullar+ı(possessive)----------------->oğulları (his/her sons)

oğul+ları(possessive)----------------->oğulları (1their son, 2their sons)

Even if it is normally unnecessary to use the possessive pronouns, it is certainly necessary in ambiguity situations so as to remove the ambiguity.

kral+ın(genitive) oğul+ı(possessive)-------->kralın oğlu (the son of the king)

kral+lar+ın oğul+ı(possessive)-------------->kralların oğlu (the son of the kings)
