The Azerbaijani army has killed 47 Armenian soldiers, while over 100 more have been injured, in the latest border skirmishes in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, according to the Azerbaijan Press Agency (APA).

Fighting in the region resumed after the Armenian army broke a cease-fire, declared 20 years ago, by launching an attack on Azerbaijani territory in early August.

The status of Nagorno-Karabakh -- a predominantly Armenian-populated enclave in Azerbaijan -- and seven adjacent provinces is a seemingly intractable problem in the South Caucasus. Diplomatic efforts to find a lasting solution to the conflict have failed over the past 20 years after Armenia occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory in the early 1990s, including Nagorno-Karabakh. Turkey closed its border with Armenia in 1993 in solidarity with Azerbaijan.
