Hi,

Can I use the -da suffix for ´last weekend´ for the story tense

It sounds correct but I am not sure

e.g

Geçen hafta sonuda bu kitabı okudum.

Geçen hafta sonu bu kitabı okudum.

Thanks in advance

Hi,

If you use the ´da´ suffix on geçen hafta sonu you must use the buffer letter ´n´ because ´sonu´ has a possessive suffix as the last letter.

So it is written as geçen hafta sonunda.

As for your question, I think you don´t often add the ´da´, when you use ´geçen´.

In English we ask ´What did you do last weekend?´

Turkish is similar ´Geçen hafta sonu neler yaptın?´

So the answer would be ´Geçen hafta sonu bu kitabı okudum´

If you wanted to emphasise when it happened then -

When did you read this book? I read it on the weekend.

Hafta sonunda bu kitabı okudum.

Geçen hafta sonunda bu kitabı okudum. Correct

Geçen hafta sonu bu kitabı okudum. Correct (sounds more clear)

Geçen hafta sonuda bu kitabı okudum. Wrong (but still understandable)
