I just heard that Turkey has banned wearing a headscarf and that you cannot enter a public building wearing one. Is this true?

Wearing a headscarf in Goverment Offices, Universities and Hospitals was banned sometime ago. I´m not sure if I understand it but I think it was strictly enforced for any type of worker (i.e. Nurse, Doctor, Professor), but less strictly enforced to the public (i.e. Patients to a hospital)

Most recently these bans are being lifted by the current Parliament. Here are a few articles:

December 2011 - "Quiet end to Turkey´s college headscarf ban" http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-11880622

October 2013 - "Turkey Lifts Longtime Ban on Head Scarves in State Offices" http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/09/world/europe/turkey-lifts-ban-on-head-scarves-in-state-offices.html

I think the whole ban was beyond ironic because in the USA and the UK, students have no problem attending University with a Headscarf.

I am curious what others think about this topic???

In my opinion I don´t see any problem in attending public buildings wearing a headscarf. Just like denizli said, in the US and UK there´s no problem in attending universities wearing a headscarf.

What do others think?

I think everyone should dress the way they want. In a free country governement has no business saying anything about religious customs or how people (women!!) should or should not dress.

Well obviously women should take a fully covering headscarf off when taking an official picture for your passport but otherwise...

Turkey is very strange country in that way. Government preeches 200-year old values ("women shoud be treated equally AMONGST EACHOTHER"), while all government related newspapers are full of half naked women every day (see http://www.gazeteoku.com/gazete-mansetleri.html). It´s obvious they don´t want women to take active part in society. In de west of Turkey women seem to be modern, but there are practically no women in the government, and when you see demonstrations or political gathering in the streets or anywhere, they are only men. Always. I wish Turkish women would show themselves, get ambitious, work their way up, let themselves been seen. The country would be better of with more women in powerful positions.

Also, I wonder if Turkey had even thought of how this headscarf ban would be viewed outside of Turkey.

I understand there are some issues relating to tolerance in Germany with the Turks. I could just imagine a German student saying to a Turkish student something like "but you´re not even allowed to wear a headscarf in your own country?"

I have a question. When you see a woman wearing a headscarf what is the first thing that comes up to your mind?

I think this is a silly question.
