Tekrar herkese merhaba,

Bugün çok sorum olduğunu biliyorum. Bunun için özür dilerim.

"Genitive suffix -nin" ne zaman kullanmam gerektiğini pek anlamıyorum.

Mesela bu iki cümle gördüm :

  • Kedi iki masanın arasına girdi.
  • Bu iki şehir arasındaki uzaklık nedir ?

Neden "Kedi iki masa arasına girdi" değil mesela ?

Veya "Bu iki şehrin arasındaki uzaklik nedir ?"

Arasındaki actually refers to uzaklık, not to the two cities. It means "that is between", the distance that is between. See here for more explanation: http://www.turkishlanguage.co.uk/ki.htm.

Whereas arası does have a possessive relationship with masa: the middle of the table.

Words with -deki tend to belong to the word that follows, as I understand.

Teşekkürler JNQ,

Ama hala tamamem açık değil çünkü ikinci cümlede de arası does have a possessive relationship with the two "şehir".

Başka bir açıklama var mı {#emotions_dlg.bigsmile}?

I´ve mentioned in another thread that the use of the genitive ending can be optional in some cases, as this one. Here:

You can also drop or keep the suffixes in these sentences. Only that it is better to use it when the nouns are specific. (Especially for the first sentence: iki masanın sounds more like the two tables, but not necessarily). Again, it doesn´t make much of a difference.
