Yüreklilik, sadece cesur olmakla olmaz. Yüreklilik, acizliğimize rağmen doğru olan şeyi yapmaktan geçer.

Courage is not just being brave. Courage is doing the right thing despite our inability.  ??

I don´t understand ´yapmaktan geçer´, anyone?

1- "Yüreklilik, acizliğimize rağmen doğru olan şeyi yapmaktır."

Literary way to say this;

2- "Yüreklilik, acizliğimize rağmen doğru olan şeyi yapmaktan geçer."

---

I think the expression "-dan/-den/-tan/-ten geçmek" refers to "yoldan geçmek" (cross/pass the road).

That is, in the 1. sentence you give a judgment. X = Y

And the literal meaning of the 2. sentence can be explained as follows;

If you want to reach the place X you should cross the road Y.

Another ´long´ way to express that sentence;

"Yürekliliğe giden yolacizliğimize rağmen doğru olan şeyi yapmaktan geçer."

Examples:

"Cennete giden yol, cehennemden geçer." (The road to heaven passes through hell.)

"Mükemmellik (or Mükemmelliğe giden/ulaştıran yol), hata yapmaktan geçer."  (The road to perfection passes through mistakes/making mistakes)

"Aşk, yanmaktan geçer." (I couldn´t translate this but I´ll try; Love is being burned./The road to love passes through burning. {#emotions_dlg.think}

Excellent, thank you so much! This clears up a lot about the use of geçmek.

Also, can you tell if the translation is correct?

E to T

Courage is doing the right thing despite our inability.

Yüreklilik, acizliğimize rağmen doğru olan şeyi yapmaktır.

T to E

Yürekliliğe giden yol, acizliğimize rağmen doğru olan şeyi yapmaktan geçer.

The road to courage passes through doing the right thing despite our inability.

T to E

Yüreklilik, acizliğimize rağmen doğru olan şeyi yapmaktan geçer

(The road toCourage passes through doing the right thing despite our inability.

When we remove the word "-e giden yol", the meaning doesn´t change in Turkish. But I´m not sure if the sentence still makes sense, if we remove "the road to".
