Why is the tane here? Would the meaning be different without it?

Good question.. and here´s the answer: the meaning wouldn´t be different without it; furthermore, the sentence would be of higher quality.

İki elma – two apples

dört köpek – four dogs

üç yatak odası - three bedrooms

beş yumurta – five eggs

etc.. even if, nowadays, nobody cares why the hell this "tane" is often there following a numeral adjective, you´d better not use it like in the examples above..

What is more strange, you may hear and see such sentences as

üç tane polis

beş tane öğretmen

iki tane asker

dört tane öğrenci

using "tane" for people is really weird, and you should absolutely avoid using it for people..

What does "tane" mean?

üzüm salkımı – bunch of grapes

üzüm tanesi – every single grape in the bunch

tane tane – one by one

tane tane konuş - speak slowly/ make your speech understood

taneyle – by the piece

elmaları taneyle sattı - s/he sold the apples by the piece

tanesi kaçaydı? - what was the price of each one?

Ağaçtan biraz elma topladım - I picked some apples from the tree

kaç elma topladın? - how many apples did you pick?

kaç tane topladın? - how many of it did you pick?

If you say "kaç tane elma topladın" this means "how many of apples did you pick"... long and a bit weird.. isn´t it?
