Hi guys,

I´m learning Turkish and would really appreciate some help with the word "diye". I think I understand it when it is used in most contexts but I have encountered a use recently which has really thrown me.

Bayan rahatsız olmasın diye boş koltuğa oturmayan adam.

Can anyone explain what function the word diye is serving here?

Thank-you in advance.

The man who doesnt sit in empty seat not to make the woman uncomfortable.

"diye" has this funny use. You use the word "like" similarly in English.

He doesn´t sit in the chair, (because he´s) like "let not a woman be uncomfortable".

Thanks

So in turkish its also the other way around?? :

Bayan rahatsız olmasın diye boş koltuğa oturmayan adam.

English:

He doesn´t sit in the chair, (because he´s) like "let not a woman be uncomfortable".

So literally you are saying:

Woman not uncomfortable like Empy chair he doesnt sit the man
