What´s the difference between a residential "site" and mahalle?

Mahalle is derived from the Arabic word "mahal" which means locality/place. Mahalle is a particular place/neighborhood, any of numerous divisions of a city or town, often with distinctive characteristics, and an electoral district.

Thank you. And how is ´site´ different to ´mahalle´?

I am a bit puzzled. Residential site. It is not plainly clear to me if you want to know about "konut alanı" or "konut sitesi"

"residential site"

"konut alanı" is a site which is zoned "new residential" under some local plans to provide new residential developments.

residential "site"

"konut sitesi" (or site) (nowadays) is theme designed housing project or high-life residence project developed on "konut alanı"

What makes me puzzled is that both have nothing to do with "mahalle" at any rate.

or did I get the question wrong?

Yes, and there is this mausoleum in the form of Taj Mahal in India. Şah Cihan, Mughal emperor, ordered it, and wanted it to be a place (=mahal) for the remains of his beloved wife, Ercüment Banu Begüm, to be buried or something like that..

Mahal, in Taj Mahal, means Palace.
