translatable or not?

it is said that a poem can never be translated but rewritten. I believe in this very much.

ilim ilim bilmektir,
ilim kendin bilmektir,
sen kendini bilmezsen,
(ya)bu nice okumaktir?

this is a very simple looking yet incredibly dense piece (like japanese Haiku poems). can some one try to translate it while catching its essence? I just could not make my self happy with any of my attepts. i wrote it by heart if there is a mistake in the actual poem please fix it.
