Is iyi geceler only used as a parting pleasantry or can it also be used when people meet up late the evening???

hey bod, from my experience of living here in Turkey i have found that the greeting you use really depends on where you are going or if someone is coming to visit you. for example the greeting you would use if guests were coming to visit would be hos geldiniz. But if you were going someone to meet i think you will find they will use merhaba. iyi geceler is mostly used for a departing goodbye.

Hope that helps
Laura

I think there is not such a rule. You can use it in the both situations. Mostly, like "see you", by the way you cannot say if you meet someone, when it is night:"iyi günler", so you can use "iyi geceler" too. But "merhaba" and "iyi akşamlar" sound better for formal conversations.
