Hey!
I've been studying the grammar from this website, but now I came to this point:
'Now, let's see where 'to be' is used:
1. To construct a sentence with a noun or adjective instead of a verb, like in English. The verb to be is the implicit verb here.
*example example...blabla*
2. To construct verbs in different tenses, the suffix for each tense is used with either present tense of 'to be' or past tense of 'to be'. Actually, it is present tense of 'to be' in all cases except the 'regular past tense'.
And this 2nd one doesn't make sense to me at all! What is meant by it? there are no examples....
thnx

When a noun is described by a noun, it adopts a possesive suffix (which differs according to vowel harmony)
example:
garden(noun)door)(noun)
garden= bahçe
door= kapı
garden door= bahçe kapısı
as you can see the word KAPI has adopted a possesive suffix and also uses an S as a buffer- Im sure you have studied this too

I understand nr 1, the problem is number 2.. it doesn't make sense, and I'm wondering who wrote the grammar, and therefore knows what he/she means by it! Thanks anyway!

What it means is that when you construct a verbal sentence you add the appropriate tense and then the appropriate suffix which IS the verb to be.
Example:
bağırmak - to shout
bağır-ıyor-um - I am shouting
verb stem + present continuous suffix + first person singular form of "to be"
bağır-ıyor-sun - You are shouting
verb stem + present continuous suffix + second person singular form of "to be"
bağır-dım - I shouted
verb stem + first person singular past form of "to be"
The "to be" suffixes come in only two forms - present and past.
All Turkish tenses except past are made up using a tense suffix (e.g. -iyor-) followed by the present tense of "to be". The simple past uses just the past form of "to be"
