most of the people learn a foreign language to be able to speak ,listen&understand. so I would advise you to use "listen and repeat method", this might take time to be able learn everything since you need some people around you. If you are going to learn from books and internet, I would advise you to start with the letters and their pronunciation.
In Turkish, what you see is what you pronounce/ what you hear is what you write. Before invasion of foreign words, we didn't spell the words, names etc. So once you are familiar with the sounds you start writing even you don't understand the meaning of the word. Then you can build up the vocabulary and start learning grammer.
There are good web sites to listen conversations.

Hmmm.. i like learning languages because I want to know what I'm eating or what's in the menu!
Most of the time, I can read but don't understand them... but slowly I'm getting there!
