In England the local Muslims (Bangladeshi's and Pakistani's) have Eid - it is usually 1 day earlier than in Turkey. It is quite an exciting time. The girls are all out on the street wearing their best clothes, brightly coloured and lavish. The boys all drive around in hired cars, with loud music playing. Sometimes they hire stretch limousines to carry them, sometimes minibuses. They call to the girls and the girls giggle a lot! Eceryone seems to be walking round talking on their mobile phones, it is all very festive. You can see lots of boys and men going to the mosque. They all wear white traditional dress.

The food is lavish and there is a lot of it. If you have any Muslim neighbours at this time, they will bring you food to share with them. My favourite are the 'Eid' sweets, which are like little cakes or biscuits. Very sweet and flavoured with nuts, rose water and honey (similar in some ways to Turkish sweets) - I love them and they are extremely fattening! I have some work colleagues who are neighbours and we generally bully them into bringing Eid sweets into the office to share with us. If they are young their mothers make them, they are very proud and pleased when we all eat them and praise their mother's cooking. Sometimes they also bring in curries and samosas for lunch for us also.

If you are white and non-muslim, our neighbours are very pleased and happy if we call out 'happy Eid' to them. It is a nice time where I live.

I wish i could have been in Turkey with my friend to share Bayram with his family.

Last year during Kurban Bayram, when sheep are sacrificed and everyone feasts on the meat and shares it with their poorer neighbours, he put some of the meat in the freezer to share with me when I went to visit in February. I was very touched and pleased about this.

I hope everyone has a wonderful, peaceful and happy Bayram
