Having lived in Turkey one year now and eventually got to a level where we can go shopping but thats about all; have decided to get our heads down and learn the language.
How long on average do you think it will take to master having a pleasant conversation with a friend or stranger that can speak no English. It is newspapers and Turkish TV I would also love to understand.
I presume some users of this forum started from nil turkish to quite proficient, so any tips and a logical timescale would be appreciated

Hello. I havent lived in turkey quite as long as a year but i have been here for 6 months. I feel that i have progressed a little with my Turkish but not much because i live in a resort where there are many english speakers and my job is with English people.
I have been told though that exposing yourself to the language (even if its having the tv on in the backround) will help you because without reaslising, every little thing helps and you will start to pick up words. Even if you dont understand what they are saying just try to pick out words you do know and it will also help you with the speed and rythem of how the Turkish people talk. I suggest spending 1 hr a day learning from books (teach yourself Turkşsh) and try to always interact with Turkish people and dont be afraid! It depends on the person as to how long it will take to master a language but with time and patience it should all come together.
Good Luck
Laura

Yes, I found that when I lived in Marmaris, even when I attempted to talk Turkish to a waiter or what have you they just replied in English; even when you ask them not to.
I have bought a couple of teach Turkish books
Thanks for your comment
