I found this peice in which a Turkish author discusses EU membership. I am very curious about this topic and appreciate any opinions about the benefits and drawbacks of Turkey joining the EU.

Why should she join? Who would benefit? What gains would Turkey make?

Why should she NOT join? Who would lose, what would be lost?

Thank you for feedback,
Christine

The European union? I'd have to look it up to refresh my memory on exactly what it is about.. If I remember correctly, it seems like it would be a good choice. Like I said though I need to go look it up lol

I don't know much about it myself either. Though I know not many Turks actually want to become part os the EU (including myself), it is just the government that wants to, because of the money that is involved.
Sorry I could not provide you with more information.

Some things that I count as pro-joining:

- Having Turkey joining the EU as such a big country of which the majority is İslamic, would show the other islamic countries where we consequently see terroristic attacks, suppressing and war, that it İS possible to be democratic and modern without losing the own identity and religion.
- Europe is becoming grey. There are lots of jobs for the youth, but no youth left (willing) to work. Turkey is a green country with many young people who would like to work.
- Import and export rules from and to Turkey will become easier and cheaper for both sides. This way both Turkey and Europe cna probably compete better with the US.
- The difficulties that Turkish people face just going abroad for holiday will dissapear as they should get open access to the rest of Europe like the other members of the EU do.

Reasons why Turkey cant/shoulnt join:

- The Cypriotic question remains unsolved. How can Europe accept a country which claims a piece of a EU member thats not theirs? (im leaving my own opinion in the middle because I have no idea.. but this in general is a problem that must be solved).
- Does Europe want to be bordered to Iran and Iraque? With open EU borders, it will also become easier for terrorists to cross borders to Western Europe
- I think the fact that the Orhan Pamuk thread got blocked by an admin already shows that there are some sensitive subjects in Turkey joining EU of which I dont see a solutıon.. Especially not with the thing France did. How can Türkiye be united to a union of which one country has a law that goes straight against their principles?
- Another important point ıs that, ın the EU, the more inhabitants a country has, the bigger voice/vote. Turkey would become the biggest country joining EU, thus having the biggest vote. However, she would be a new country, ın which many developments still have to come through, but she would also get the biggest vote.

The above mentioned arguments are not really stated with certain facts. They are just thoughts I have.
I myself dont have an opinşon whether turkey should join or not. There have been sooo many discussions on dutch telly that ı got totally confused. But I thınk Turkey wıll join. Shes been trying for ıt for sooooo many years and tried to fulfill all EUs wishes, that I wıll be surprised ıf EU has the guts to turn their back to Turkey now..

"The West has always been prejudiced against the Turks, but we Turks have always consistently moved towards the West. In order to be a civilized nation, there is no alternative" ------ Kemal Ataturk.

There is a strong voice from the UK for Turkey to join because of Turkeys close ties to USA, Turkey will offset the negative voice of France. The Franco-German alliance is need of dilution.

I am for.

Turkey already a member of Council of Europe.
Member of NATO.
Turkey has already seen reforms that have contributed to a better standard of living due to the closer relations and working to complience for EU entry.
Needs foreign Currency.
More freedom of movement and possibility of working abroad.
A Mainly Muslim Turkey will give greater credibility to EU with other Muslim states.
Turkey is westernised and the youth more so.

As an aside Turkey enters the European Song Contest and plays Football in European competitions.

I want Turkey to join the EU but not at a cost of losing its identity.

5 years ago, joining the EU meant something. But now, look at the impoverished nations that have little to offer that have been granted entrance before Turkey. It disgusts me.

The Turkish economy is growing at over 7% without being in the EU. Turkey is not a begger that needs to get on its knees to join the EU.

Key items that are not negotiable for entry:
Cypress, PKK, Armenia and internal military procedues.

As long as these items are not on the table, I welcome it.
