Alacahöyük, 36 kms from Boðazkale, is an important place of the Hittite era. Before the Hittites, the Hattion -a Bronze Age culture- dominated in this district and the finds of gold and bronze objects from this period are sheltered now in the Anatolian Civilizations Museum in Ankara. All the remaining ruins at Alacahoyuk, however, date from the Hittite period.
The Sphinx Gate at the south was the main gate of the city. This gate is flanked by two well-worn sphinxes facing outward. On the jamb there is a relief (plaster cast) of a double-eagle holding a rabbit in ots claws.
