Side, one of the best-known classical sites in Turkey, was an ancient harbor whose name meant pomegranate. Now it is a pretty resort town, with ancient ruins, two sandy beaches and extensive tourist accommodation. There are numerous shops that line the narrow streets, selling typical Turkish handicrafts including leather goods and Turkey’s famous beautiful gold jewelry.
Side has been taken under the protection of UNESCO.
