Turkey´s Wonders of the World

The Temple of Artemis, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus and the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul… we look at how all three became Turkey’s Wonders of the World. 

If you’re looking for a reason to visit Turkey, you could do worse than focus on its historical and architectural roots.

After all, Turkey boasts more Greek ruins than Greece and more Roman sites than Italy, including Troy, known as the centre of ancient civilization. 

It’s not every country that can boast three wonders of the world either – two from ancient times, another from the Middle Ages. 

Yet that’s just what Turkey can do, with The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus and the Mausoleum of Maussollos at Halicarnassus listed as two of the original Seven Wonders of the (Ancient) World. 

They sit alongside former mosque Hagia Sophia in Istanbul – listed as one of the Wonders of the Medieval World. Here we look at their history in more detail...
