The past tense of the verb ‘to be' is formed by adding the past tense suffix ‘-di (idi)' to the noun-based words: ‘yalnız-dı, okulda-y-dı, güzel-di, sıcak-tı, kapalı-y-dı' etc.

● The suffix ‘-di' with third person plural can be added  either before the personal   suffix ‘-ler' or after the suffix: yalnızdılar / yalnızlardı

The past tense of the verb ‘to be' can be expressed in two ways: ‘yalnız idim.' (written separately) or ‘yalnızdım.' (as a suffix). The second use is more common in Turkish.

Dün akşam evde yalnızdım.

Geçen hafta sonu Ankara'daydık.

Film çok güzeldi.

Barış Manço çok ünlü bir şarkıcıydı.

Ali ve küçük kardeşi bahçedeydiler / bahçedelerdi.

On dakika önce masada bir cep telefonu vardı.

NEGATIVE

To form the negative of the simple past tense of the verb ‘to be'  the word ‘değil'  is placed after the word it negates and the appropriate personal endings are added to ‘değil':

Film çok güzel değildi.

Dün Mert benimle birlikte değildi.

Dün akşam evde yalnız değildim.

Dün akşam annem ve babam evde değildiler / değillerdi.

Bugün sınıfta üç öğrenci yoktu.

‘Değil'  without a personal ending negates the previous word:

Dün akşam evde değil, dışarıdaydım.

Geçen hafta sonu İstanbul'da değil, Ankara'daydım.

Sabah hava sisli değil, açıktı.

Çocuklar evde değil, parktalardı / parktaydılar.

Masanın üzerinde iki değil, üç kitap vardı.

INTERROGATIVE

In the interrogative form the personal endings are usually added to the interrogative particle ‘-mi' which is written separately from the preceding word:

Dün akşam evde miydin?

Mutlu muydunuz?

Film güzel miydi?

Çocuklar odalarında mıydılar / odalarındalar mıydı?

Dün gece hava yağmurlu muydu?

The stress falls on the syllable before the interrogative particle: Mutlu muydunuz?                      

NEGATIVE INTERROGATIVE

The negative interrogative form of the verb ‘to be' is made with ‘değil mi':

Dün akşam evde değil miydin?

Film güzel değil miydi?

Ahmet ve Ali sınıfta değiller miydi / değil miydiler?

Banka açık değil miydi?

Siz tatilde değil miydiniz?

The stres falls on ‘değil': Film güzel değil miydi?
