How to Form Negative Sentences

1- Negative Form of the Verbs

To make a verb negative, add –me suffix at the root of the verb. Surely, this suffix should be adapted to the verb by using vowel harmony.

For example;

beklemek : to wait

bekle-mek : to wait ! Here bekle is the root of the verb.

bekle-me-mek : not to wait

oturmak : to sit

otur-mak : to sit ! Here otur is the root of the verb.

Otur-ma-mak : not to sit

Here we used –ma instead of –me according to the vowel harmony.

Now look at the verbs below and try to write their negative form.

bakmak / saklamak / gelmek / yenilmek / ölmek / üzülmek / bakınmak

2- Negative Forms of Nouns and Adjectives

To make a noun or an adjective negative, add “değil” at the and of the noun or adjective

For example;

Bu bir bilgisayar.   (This is a computer.)

Bu bir bilgisayar değil. (This is not a computer.)

Bu çok güzel.(This is very beautiful.)

Bu çok güzel değil.(This is not very beautiful.)

Bu çok güzel bir kız.(She is a very beautiful girl.)

Bu çok güzel bir kız değil.(She is not a very beautiful girl.)

Now look at the sentences below and try to write their negative forms.

Bu bir araba  /  Bu güzel /  Bu çiçek kırmızı / Bu bir kız
